The number of points each school receives will depend on pledges and also on how much rubbish is diverted away from landfill in Lancashire. Participating primary schools will share in a points reward scheme, based on reducing the total weight of rubbish that is sent to landfill sites each month.

The tonnages of monthly rubbish going to landfill and the points allocated::

11,800 tonnes = 90,000 points
11,799 - 11,500 tonnes = 95,000 points
11,499 - 11,200 tonnes = 100,000 points
11,000 or less tonnes = 120,000 points

So, for example, in a month when the total landfilled rubbish collected in Lancashire is 11,300 tonnes, the total number of points available for distribution to schools is 100,000 points.

The portion of the total pledges achieved by each school will determine the proportion of the points values to be credited to that school each month.

Here’s an individual example

Pupils at School A have collected 500 signed pledge forms. Throughout the county there are a total of 40,000 pledge forms from all participating schools. School A therefore has one-eightieth share of the total points available (i.e. 40,000/500 = 80).

In a month when 11,300 tonnes of recyclable waste is collected from Lancashire homes, School A will therefore be awarded 1,250 points (i.e. 100,000/80 = 1,250 points).

IMPORTANT: In the first month of the scheme only, each pledge will be worth 1 point to the school nominated on the form.

It is important to remember that signed pledges are worthless if the pledging household does not recycle.
